archival greeting cards

These are just some of the hundreds of greeting cards I create each year for ArtWalk. Each are about 5x6.5", hand made, signed and sealed. I try to create a card for nearly every full scale traditional or digital piece I create. I love the idea of making owning a little piece of artwork affordable at only $5, they can be given away or framed.  If you are ever interested in some, just let me know. I Love to be a Daddy- hits the streets!

Here it is! I finally got to hold it in my hands yesterday and have been itching to show you since, a quick pic here of the book John Fenyes penned and I illustrated. The format of this book is a little different than you might be used to. Somewhat traditional illustrations, but the text is organized in a way that the right side of the spread is home to the rhythmic rhymes of the children's story, while the left offers a personal reflection on fatherhood, with stories and encouragement from John. A moment for the reader while the child is looking at the illustrations. Beautiful job John! So proud he invited me to be a part of this project! Thank you John for the amazing collaboration!

Illustration Friday: Together

Together:
This has been an eventful week for myself and my sister. I decided to honor her and her team and the amazing work they do "together".  She has for many years been paddling with an incredible group of strong women, "the wikiki beach boys" in an 6 person outrigger canoe. This act alone is commendable, but this weekend they raced in the 35th "Na Wahine o ke kai" This race takes them from Molokai to Oahu over 41 miles in what ended up to be 6 hours an 19 minutes. They came in second to long time rivals by a mere 7 minutes.  They had hopes to regain the title after a year without, but had an incredible race regardless.  They did it together.

Illustration Friday: TOTEM

I couldn't resist, upon seeing the Illustration Friday topic for the week. I'm not showing you the whole drawing and this one has been manipulated a bit for color and focal point. This happens to be part of a spread in "I love to be a Daddy" where the ever evolving dad morphs himself into a totem pole while the family is on a camping trip. He shares stories of family history along with some wonderful camp stories. I enjoy the preteen son listening but pretending not to:)

Wow, it's been another busy week, so this isn't a new one, but I haven't shown it yet.  It is one of the cover comps for a book I illustrated due out in October. I thought it fit the fresh topic, This Dad is cookin up all sorts of fresh food for his kids.  Mostly Mac and cheese, but it's still fresh:)

It's interesting that in considering a hybrid topic I landed here.  I often assign hybrid creature creation in my character design or photoshop classes, and it is always a favorite assignment. But I took a different route here.  

The drawing is a hybrid of sorts, traditional first (ink, paint, pencil) then digital manipulation (photoshop)

The jungle tour bus was my starting point, in this drawing, it was the first thing I drew and the city sprung up around it.  I also limited myself to one Sakura Micron 01 pen for the entire drawing which measures about 10 x 10.5in.

Illustration Friday: Travel

It has been a while since I tackled a topic for Illustration Friday, but I was excited to find the time to jump in on this one.  My thought process had me traveling a number of places in considering the theme, however this resolution came to me as I watched my son play in our small backyard yesterday afternoon.

Nearly each day, he asks that we go outside and I choose a show to watch from what he calls Reidivision.  Based on his name of course, he offers me a list of titles, sometimes previews, and I choose one.  Then it begins, he acts out every part, envisions the mountains, the ships, the other worlds, creatures beyond description.  He is truly traveling in our yard, going places I try to imagine with him, but he is by far there, right in the jungle, the swamp, the city, the future, the past, or places alive in his mind.  So with that I thought this the perfect solution for how one might travel without travel.
